Show AllThe Tiji festival takes place in Lo-Manthang, the ancient walled capital of Upper Mustang. Perched at an altitude of 3840m/12600ft, this historic city preserves its medieval essence with narrow alleys, whitewashed mud-brick homes, and majestic monasteries. Once the seat of the independent Kingdom of Lo, Lo-Manthang continues to stand as a living stronghold of Tibetan culture and spirituality.
Set to take place from May 14–16, 2026, and anticipated around May 12–14, 2027, the Tiji Festival provides a rare opportunity to experience the spiritual depth and timeless heritage of Lo-Manthang, the legendary walled capital of Upper Mustang.
During the festival, the royal courtyard transforms into a vibrant stage where monks, local residents, and international trekkers gather in celebration. The participation of the royal family and the performance of time-honored rituals add depth and authenticity to this culturally rich event.
Tiji, short for "Tenpa Chirim" meaning "Prayer for World Peace," is a vibrant Tibetan Buddhist festival rooted in a 17th-century legend from Mustang. It commemorates the triumph of Dorje Jono, a deity who defeated his demon father, Ma Tam Ru Ta, who had brought drought, disease, and chaos to the land. The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil and acts as a powerful ritual for purification, harmony, and renewal.
Held over three days in Lo-Manthang, the heart of Upper Mustang, Tiji centers around Vajrakila rituals at Chode Gompa. Monks adorned in elaborate costumes and masks perform sacred dances, notably the Tso Chham and Rha Chham, each dramatically reenacting key episodes from the myth. These performances not only preserve an ancient spiritual legacy but also bring the entire community together in celebration and devotion.
